Guided Tours of the Church

Guided tours of our three churches are arranged both for visitors and parishioners. St. Mary's has regular guided tours in the Summer. This involves a talk on the history of the church and parish and a visit to the Countess of Clare's private chapel as well as the church crypt. This tour can take up to one hour depending on the interest and the age of the visitors. Schools often visit the church and talks can be arranged to meet their particular needs and to complement the demands of the National Curriculum. These visits and talks are usually given by a qualified teacher. The church welcomes preliminary visits by teachers to plan the details of a visit. To arrange a guided tour, please contact Gill or Peter Clarke (tel: 01983 566740).

The church crypt contains a pictorial history of the Church on the Island. History booklets can be obtained about:

The Church in Ryde
Carisbrooke Priory
Victorian Benefactors of Ryde
The Churches at Bembridge and Seaview
The Life of St. Wilfrid
The Life of the Countess of Clare
The Isle of Wight Martyrs

The Catholic History Society will also arrange talks on various aspects of the Faith and Church history. In the recent past we have had talks on:

The local martyrs
Pre-Reformation monasticism on the Island
Devotion to Our Lady
The churches of Ryde
St. Wilfrid, Patron of the Island
Our Lady of Walsingham
The Dowry of Mary
Vestments and relics
Christian poets on the Island

Guided tours of St. Cecilia's and Quarr Abbey can also be arranged. Contact the two abbeys directly.
